QUESTIONS FOR SAND SCULPTURE ART

Are the sands really created from only sand and water?

Yes! Sculptures are created from sand with only water pressurized with special machines. River sand has some alluvium and sharp and disordered surface structure. When this sand is mixed with water and pressurized, sculptures are created and stand for a long time. Sand sculptures are entirely block structures and do not have any other material for support except sand internally or externally.

What happens when it rains?

Of course we get a little damp! Summer and spring rains do not damage sculptures much. However, heavy rain during winter with strong thunders and in long periods damages the surfaces of sculptures, but we can easily restore such wear and tear. Thus Sandland is the first and only sand sculpture exhibition in the world open for visits for 12 months.

Alright, then what are those things you spray on sculptures?

It is not egg white or cement! We apply a thin, environment friendly, water based solution over the sculptures to make them get less damage before entering winter period of Antalya with lots of thunder and heavy rain. This solution creates a thin membrane on the sand with the thickness of millimeter and this prevents rain water to enter in the sculpture, at least for a while! However, if the rain is constant and heavy, this membrane also gets damaged and drains away and sculptures start to get deteriorated without protection.

What is the lifetime of sculptures?

Lifetime of sand sculptures staying in open air depends primarily to weather conditions. Of course it is very important that our visitors avoid touching and directly contacting with sculptures. Unfortunately, damage to our sculptures are mostly caused by our visitors, not weather conditions.

How long does it take to create sculptures?

20 professional sculptors and technical team consisting of 15 people coming from different countries in the world have worked to transform 10.000 tons of raw sand into art pieces by working 8 hours a day for 3 weeks. Trust us, they really achieved a very hard task!

Are there any other examples of these sculptures in Türkiye or in the world?

Sandland is the first and only sand sculpture exhibition of Türkiye. We decide which sculptures will be created within the theme selected each year together with the sculptors and we carefully consider that these sculptures have no other examples. If there are exhibitions copying us, of course, we cannot know about them 🙂 In the world, there are similar activities organized in different countries.
by the way, Sandland is the only sand sculpture museum in the world that can be visited throughout 12 months.

Are sculptures ever toppled over?

Yes! Since we change the theme each year, we break down sand sculptures and make new sculptures according to that year’s theme.

Is exhibition area suitable for wheelchair?

Exhibition surface has a medium hardness and wheelchairs can be driven on it.

Can we bring our pets?

Yes, but with their leashes on.
